I couldn't believe it. He thought I was asleep, but I was awake, my heartbeat calm and my eyes closed. But, with all of that, I heard him, his voice.
Jacob loved me back.
I would have opened my eyes, but I wanted to see if he'd say more. He only brought me to my bed though. But I was sleeping next to him. It made this horrible day feel like a blessing.
At this point, I was asleep, hunting.
I had the scent of a deer, a frail doe on the verge of death. I ran through the trees, the exhilarating feeling of running like that still amazes me to this day. The wind on your face...it feels like you're only walking, when you're really going faster than anything imaginable.
And then I stopped abruptly, spotting my prey. She had some small fawns around her and a large buck stood over the laying doe. She was close to death and they all were here to see their mother's death.
It was a sad scene, and I was here to make the doe's death quick. I remembered how it felt, to have no power to help anyone as you watch them face their horrid fate. My mind raced back to my Mother, but I quickly shook my head and forgot about it, remembering I had to get the doe before she died.
"So which deer is yours?"
At first, the voice startled me, but then I quickly realized it was the sweet voice I loved. What was he doing here? I had no time to ask. "The mother."
"Bad idea. She isn't dying from the bullet wound. She's dying of disease. If you take her, you'll be infected and die. I can smell it in the blood."
I looked wide-eyed at Jacob. It was amazing how knowledgeable he was. "Oh....thanks. I'll take a fawn then." It felt so awkward....I felt like I was going to burst out 'I love you!' in the middle of feeding. I couldn't be near him. It felt to awkward....but I didn't know how to ask him to leave.
"I'll take the buck." And Jacob leaped out from their hiding spot in the trees and landed next to the buck. The male deer turned his attention to the intruder, wanting to protect his fawns and doe.
Jacob leapt upward, his teeth grazing against the buck right before it picked it self up and kicked him backwards. Jacob got back up quickly, growling as the buck got ready to attack, its antlers down, being aimed. And then, it ran, full speed, for Jacob.
He moved just in time for the attack to miss him. Then again, I didn't even see him move. One moment he was one place, the next, three feet from the exact spot.
Jacob lifted his fist and punched the buck's back, hard. I heard a snap, and the buck fell. One kick, with all of his strength, and the buck had no strength left to fight. It was close to death. Jacob bent down next to it and sunk his teeth into the hairy neck.
The doe had died during the short fight, seeing the buck for one last time in all its glory. The fawns were to occupied with their mother's death to see me coming at them. I didn't want to do this....it was wrong. But one less fawn in the world wouldn't make a difference, right?
I took my fist and aimed it at one of the small fawn's head. I felt guilty about doing this, but I was about to lose control. I would have rather done it with a choice. My fist came down and the other fawns ran, seeing their sister or brother fall. I wasn't sure of the gender of the deer.
Before I could stop myself, I dug my teeth into its small neck. By the time I was done, I looked over at Jacob and he was watching me. I gave him a weak smile and, thank God, saw the sun start to rise. "Time to wake up." I announced.
Jacob sighed and disappeared. He was waking up. I closed my eyes and, once I opened them, was once again, in my room. Jacob was at my bedroom door. "You know what day it is?" He asked, a grin on his face.
"What?" I asked, confused.
"Friday."
I looked at him in astonishment. "I must go before the sun comes out. You have a dress in the closet. I hope you like it."
But before I could say anything, he was gone. What dress? I didn't have a dress? I got up from my bed and walked to the closet. Opening it, I saw a beautiful satin, golden dress.
A black strap was attached to the middle of the dress to hold it up, the strap, I realised, had to go around my neck. If I put on the dress, it would drag on the floor while I walked. But, I guess, that's how it was supposed to be.
Next to the dress was a pair of flat shoes that matched the color of the dress. They almost looked like ballet slippers, and I couldn't wait to wear them. Now, I just had to do my hair. True, I had the whole day, but I had to look as amazing as the dress.
As I closed the door, I noticed something on the wall. It was a thin, white piece of paper. On it was written:
You have three hours to get ready. The Elder's right hand lady will come and get you. The Elder will speak with you and by the time you are done the ceremony shall begin.
Jacob
I only had three hours??!!! I ran to the shower, quickly washing my hair and body not giving the conditioner or shampoo a chance to sink in and really get to my scalp.
I rushed out of the shower. Only twenty minutes had passed. I put on a shirt to wear while I got ready. The dress would be last.
I brushed my hair, attacking every knot, hating when I got one so big I would have to spend an excecive amount of time on it. Finally, my hair was knot free. I put it in a high ponytail, satisfied with it.
"Makeup....where did I put my- here it is!!" I pulled out a bag of makeup and took out the blush. Putting on a small amount, I figured I didn't want to look to unnatural.
After a soft shade of lip gloss and eyeshadow, I opened my closet door. There it was, the dress. I slipped it on and then put the shoes on. I looked at the clock and saw I had a few minutes left to myself.
Putting the shoes on, I sighed in reliefe. I was done in time. Closing the closet door, I went to the bathroom and looked at the full length mirror that hung on the wall.
I looked incredible. And as I was admiring myself, there was a knock on the door. It was time.
